Fat transfer has a wide variety of applications in plastic surgery — from filling in hollowed body contours to rejuvenating the face. At the Tehrani Plastic Surgery Center, an Inland Empire fat transfer procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, making it one of the most popular cosmetic surgery options in the area. So how exactly should you determine if fat transfer is for you? Read on below!
What happens during a fat transfer?
Basically, a fat transfer procedure involves harvesting and purifying your own fat from a certain part of your body and re-injecting it into bodily areas which acquire augmentation such as the face, lips, hands, breasts, buttocks, and areas which may develop uneven contours following scarring.
How should I know if I’m qualified to donate (and also receive!) my own fat?
On your fat transfer initial consultation with Dr. Tehrani, a thorough assessment will be done to evaluate whether you’re a perfect fat donor for your self. Ideally, you should be in excellent health, physically and emotionally. Also, realistic expectations are a must. Most importantly, you need to have adequate amounts of fat deposits.
Can you give me an idea as to what happens during the procedure?
Fat transfer is performed on an outpatient basis. Both the area from which the fat is taken and the treatment site are anesthetized with a local anesthetic. Using a small needle attached to a syringe, fat is removed from a donor site, where the fat is most tightly packed, such as your abdomen or the buttocks.
Once removed, the fat is processed to remove excess fluids and then reinjected using another needle, which is placed under the skin beneath the wrinkle. This process may be repeated until the desired correction has been achieved.
What’s the recovery period like?
The swelling and bruising which typically follows surgery will last for 2 to 3 weeks. You may be asked not to sit or lie down on the area of surgery.
